The various workarounds to bypass the IP count have been discussed and it's been argued both ways many times. My personal take on it is that "Protected IPs" means equipment that connects to the internet and the traffic flows through the Astaro's Internal & External Interfaces on the trip. Things like network printers used only on the local LAN, or VOIP phones that only ever talk to a PBX on the local LAN, are not 'protected' because they should never send traffic beyond the LAN. I didn't know about that trick at the time but back when we used a 10IP/User mail security license (legacy licensing, when network security was part of the base) to protect our email server and allow a small 3 person office into our network, we routinely came up against that warning. I discussed it with our partner at the time and their call was that because we had three PC's in the remote office, 1-2 PPTP VPN users, and the mail server we were still within the limit allowed regardless of what the IP count said.Īs an aside, I always wondered if counting by MAC as opposed to by IP would work better.
